 Welsh Secretary visits Swansea’s Business Success Stories 

As part of her continued commitment and support for business growth, the Secretary of State for Wales, Cheryl Gillan today (26 January) met with Swansea-based businesses that are making great strides in helping to drive the Welsh economy forward.

During the visit to the city, Mrs Gillan saw first hand how the private sector and entrepreneurs are playing a critical part in creating a stronger, more stable economic environment.

Mrs Gillan first met with Rachael Flanagan, a 24-year-old entrepreneur and director of cleaning company Mrs Bucket.

Ms Flanagan founded Mrs Bucket Cleaning Services at the age of 18, armed with only a vacuum cleaner and some flyers. Today, she employs more than 80 staff, has 110 domestic clients inSwansea, Llanelli and Port Talbot, over 90 commercial contracts spanning Saundersfoot toNewport. Rachael Flanagan has just expanded the Domestic arm of the business into Cardiff and in less than 2 weeks they already have employed 2 new staff.

They met at the Swansea Vale premises of one of Mrs Bucket’s newly acquired contracts, Trojan Electronics. The rapidly expanding product repair and refurbishment company recently announced that it is set to create 60 new jobs in Swansea over the next 18 months, and secured a place on the Sunday Times Fast Track 100 list in 2010.

Ms Flanagan said: I’m absoloutely thrilled to meet Cheryl Gillan today. I feel extremely honoured that she has travelled down from Westminster to hear about my plans. We are very excited for this year and look forward to offering more jobs for Wales and beyond.

Speaking after the visits, Mrs Gillan said:

“Rachael Flanagan is a truly inspirational woman. I think that it is true to say that as I write this article, in October 2011, we as business owners, entrepreneurs and managers may be considered to be under more stress or pressure that at any other time previously in our working lives.

With the average business owner and manager believing they have to put more effort into the business to stay ahead of the competition and to become more successful there is no wonder that anxiety and depression are on an increase in the UK.

There are many different areas in our lives in which we can associate stress and many different reasons that cause stress but in truth it can just be a single issue or a collection of issues that can really affect our emotional condition.  What is quite worrying however, is that a lot of the time we don’t even realise that we are stressed!

In this article I really wanted to focus on great top tips for managers, entrepreneurs and business owners to help them stay ahead of the game:

1. Your Choices – Firstly we must realise that we all have a choice on how we behave in any situationespecially on how much time we spend at work.  This is really common with business owners and managers of small business.  Think about this logically there really is no point being at work running on only one of your four cylinders.
2. 2.      Time Management – Time management can help greatly in the reduction of stress at work.  So definitely make a list every day, write everything down on the list, rank the list and focus totally on the highest priority.
3. Time Wasting – Email has very quickly become the biggest time waster in modern day business because we have trained ourselves to check the email as soon as it arrives.  Studies have shown that it takes up to 15 minutes to regain focus after any interruption.  Top Tip – Do not look at your email until after lunch. Kanarek said “if you waste just one hour per day at the end of the year you have wasted 5 weeks of work!”
4. 4.      Overloading Our Conscious Awareness – George Miller’s work in 1957 stated that our conscious awareness can only hold 7 + or – 2 bits of information.  This means that if we have more than between 5 to 9 things on our mind, at any one time, then it is likely that we will be confused.  If we are confused we can’t concentrate our focused effort on to our project resulting in our goals taking longer to be achieved.
5. Me Time – Have frequent breaks throughout the day.  Get out of your workspace and have a walk around. Take time out for a walk in fresh air at lunchtime.  This is great for your mental state but it can also be great for your business.  (commonly known as walking the 4 corners of your business or W4C)
6. Take Control of Your Time – You must be aware of time vampires – these are the people who take up a lot of your day by saying “have you got a minute” be strict and never allow this to happen.
7. 7.      Avoid Unhealthy Habits – Our mental state has a huge influence on what we do.  What tends to happen when things are not going our way is we make unhealthy choices in food, drink and take very little exercise.  Be aware of this!!!
8. 8.      Implement Focus Periods – Turn the phones off, close the office door, ensure that no one can contact you like your life depended on you completing the task in hand.  Create an imaginary deadline if this helps!
9. 9.      Become the Judge – You must become the judge of what is urgent Vs what is important.  Important is something that needs to be done eventually , while urgent is something that has to be done right now.

10.  Brain Dumping – This is a coaching technique that allows you to switch off mentally on an evening.  Train yourself to write everything down (i.e. dump everything out of your brain onto paper) even keep a notepad at the side of your bed in case you have an idea or remember something that you have missed.  Once it is documented or dumped you can forget about it in the knowledge that it is on the paper when you need it.

11.  Work Life Balancing – You often hear people talking about work/life balance.  Well for busy people this is not always possible.  So realise that this is about balancing and not balance.  It is OK to spend more time a work when it is necessary or required but you must address the balance in your life when the time is right.

Unfortunately we are all, to some degree, influenced by our environment but you know what “sh*t happens” and unfortunately it always will.  It is my belief that it is not what happens in life but it is how you respond to it that counts!
