4 Tips To Keep Your Garden Furniture Clean This Summer

With the gorgeous summer weather finally here, most of us will be enjoying more time in the garden with friends and family. Whether you’re sunbathing on loungers or getting the BBQ going, having the garden furniture ready for all occasions is the best way to enjoy last minute plans without the stress of getting the garden ready in a rush…

Here’s our 4 tips to keep your garden furniture clean…

Wood Furniture

Whilst wood furniture looks lovely amongst the gardens nature, it takes quite a lot of love and attention to maintaining it and keeping it looking good.

Here’s some tips to clean wood furniture:

  • Use a warm sugar soap solution and a scrubbing brush to remove dirt. Use a hose pipe (not a pressure washer) to wash away the dirt and let the furniture dry.
  • If there is mildew or stubborn marks like bird droppings on your furniture, use a mixture of 1 cup bleach and 1 cup washing powder in a bucket of warm water. Lather the mixture onto the furniture and leave to soak for 5 minutes before hosing off with warm water.

(Use gloves and old clothes when handling bleach)

  • Avoid using oils or sealant son new oak furniture. Only wood which has been exposed to the elements for about 10 years with an open surface grain should need oil.

Metal Furniture

Whilst metal furniture can look modern and come reasonably priced, it can take a lot of maintenance to prevent it from rusting. Most people buy metal furniture and never maintain it. This results in the furniture getting rusty and changing colour. It can also affect the strength of the furniture making it weaker over time.

Here’s some tips to clean and maintain metal furniture:

  • Remove any imperfections with a metal polishing paste a solution of equal parts white wine vinegar and water.
  • To remove scratches, use a non- abrasive product on a soft cloth.
  • Avoid alkaline cleaners as these can cause rusting.
  • To prevent rust, sand the metal down (even if it is painted), then wipe of the residue with a damp cloth and some mineral spirit. Then use a ruse-resistant primer before painting with rust-resistant paint.
  • Hose down frequently so that the metal maintains its natural lustre and wipe down with a layer of car wax to prevent rusting.

Plastic Furniture

Plastic furniture is probably the most affordable option and is therefore very popular. However, dirty plastic furniture that’s lost its colour is not a good look in anyone’s garden.

Here’s some tips for keeping your plastic furniture clean and restoring its colour:

  • Wipe down the furniture with 1 part vinegar and 2 parts water and then wash down with a hose pipe.
  • For tougher stains, try using bicarbonate soda on a sponge and gently rub in circular motions.
  • When the furniture is completely dry after cleaning, add some WD-40 to bring back the furniture’s shine.
  • Use car wax to protect the furniture in the future.

Rattan Furniture

Rattan furniture is a popular choice for many households due to its minimal maintenance requirements. If you’re considering buying a rattan garden set, try and opt for ‘synthetic rattan’ instead of ‘natural rattan’.

High quality synthetic rattan furniture is maintenance free and can be left outdoors all year round and only needs 1 annual clean. Natural rattan, however, is only recommended to be used in dry sunny weather.

Keeping rattan furniture clean is simple:

  • Wash down with a hose (on a fan spray setting) and soapy water
  • Use an old toothbrush to remove any lodged dirt in the weave
  • Never use abrasive brushed or scourers as this will damage the weave.
